The digital air permeability tester according to Gurley consists of a robust cylinder with a pneumatic lifting and lowering mechanism. The start and stop position of the cylinder is detected by a sensor.

The device is operated by a separate control unit, which evaluates the measurement data and displays it on a digital display, as well as calculating statistical values.
